Started in 2016, and now activating four affordable interim creative workspaces in San José, California.

Local Color began as an adventurous "interim-use" project activating the 27 S. First Street building in San José. The program is possible with the support of developer partnerships who care about the community we are working to empower. Vacant buildings waiting in the planning process before development are re-opened as temporary creative co-working spaces, artist studios, and community gathering sites - offered at below-market rates.

Eight years later, Local Color is now activating over 22,000 sq. ft. in the heart of downtown SJ! Dubbed the “Digital” Underground and 50 Barack Obama Studio, the artists in residence shape each facility to meet their needs for a wide range of creative mediums and need of room to explore their passions. At a Local Color studio, you will find local creatives at different points of their journey working and learning alongside each other. We are committed to facilitating a safe, accessible, intersectional, diverse, and joyful space and collective network resource.
