Welcome to Eastridge

at Eastridge Center

By Frankie McFly & San Jose Community Members

Welcome to Eastridge was created to celebrate Eastridge Center’s 50 year anniversary. This project beautified a permanent construction barrier inside Eastridge Center with a community-engaged mural. The artwork was informed by local East San Jose history and icons.

Artist Frankie McFly designed and painted Welcome to Eastridge with help from community members as they were invited to add their own unique, personal touches to the original design. Following the community painting day, Frankie McFly called upon fellow San Jose artists Elba Raquel and Lucia Maldonado for the final stretch of painting. This mural shows the importance of community and collaboration in San Jose as well as the fond memories shared at Eastridge Center.

This mural commemorates 50 years of Eastridge Mall serving the local community. The icons inside the letters represent stores and items you’d find inside Eastridge. Outside of the letters are East San Jose landmarks.
I have stories and personal connections with most of the icons on the mural. My favorite are the two VTA bus day passes from 1997. As a teenager, I’d buy a day pass when I’d ride the bus from my house to Eastridge. I still have those two day passes saved from when I was 16 years old.
