Color Me Rad
Connecting aspiring young creatives with working artists
Color Me Rad is a free summer arts program for youth ages 11–17 that connects aspiring young artists with working artists. Through artist-facilitated workshops at Local Color’s noble gallery & workshop space in downtown San Jose, participants explore a new creative medium and develop their own artistic practice in a supportive group setting.
Working alongside a teaching artist and assistant artist, students gain hands-on experience while building real projects. Past workshops have explored murals, photography, painting, hand lettering, and miniature street scenes.
At the end of the program, students present their work in a public group exhibition where they have the opportunity to sell their art. All participants also receive a stipend for their time.
This summer, Color Me Rad will feature workshops in maque art, zines & storytelling, and stencils & mixed-media posters.
Summer 2026 Workshops
Maque Art
Maque Art (ages 11-13), led by Arely Cardenas, is an exploration of a Mexican decorative art form that involves applying layers of pigment and lacquer to create luminous, intricately patterned surfaces. This workshop will explore the cultural history, technical process, and contemporary relevance of this traditional decorative practice, allowing young artists to connect cultural heritage with modern creative expression.
Zines & Storytelling
Zines & Storytelling (ages 14-17), led by Alicia Cardell, will explore narrative-driven art. Through guided exercises, students will develop original zines that combine writing, illustration, and design to communicate personal and community stories. In the process, youth will develop their creative voice, build confidence, and learn how to use accessible publishing tools.
Stencils & Mixed Media Posters
Stencils & Mixed Media Posters (ages 14-17), led by Mathew Scicluna, will introduce accessible public-art techniques while encouraging students to experiment with materials and visual communication strategies. Youth will work alongside Mathew to explore stencil making, layering, composition, and message-driven design.
